HSMI challenge model
VESO Vikan has together with the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science established a new HSMI challenge model.
Significant effort has been made to understand the infection dynamics of piscine reovirus (PRV) and development of HSMI. Several trials have been carried out at VESO Vikan in collaboration with scientists from the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science (NMBU) and the Norwegian Veterinary Institute (NVI). The virus was recently found to infect red blood cells, and very high levels can be found at early stages of infection.
VESO Vikan has established a sea water cohabitation model where high viral loads (up to 90 mill copies) can be found 6 to 10 weeks after challenge by cohabitation, followed by significant histopathological changes.
