Brynsløkken's philosophy with anti-fouling products is that success depends of choice of product and optimal product application.

Fouling pressure may vary from year to year, but may nevertheless be efficiently managed. We systematically follow and assess the protective effects of our products to monitor fouling rates.


Anti-foulants act when the biocides (toxins) in the product leach out into the proximal environment. The biocides are not active before leaving the pen wall and react locally with attached organisms. Release of adequate amounts of biocides per unit of time/ per surface area afford the target protection levels.


Two factors influence on the duration and effect of anti-foulants:

1) External influence/ natural variation

Current conditions, salinity and temperature affect the rate biocide release and subsequent effect. Temperature appears to be a key variable for product performance. Finding the right balance is challenging but - we believe - feasible.  

2) Variations in the raw material

Some commodities may have relatively "wide" specification ranges. This may be related to the fact that the raw materials are not initially intended for water-based systems, but for use in solvent-based anti-foulants for ships. We are devoted to understanding and controlling the batch-to-batch variability in protection levels in different environments. 

We are currently promoting systems that will enable us to monitor variability in performance and ultimately to improve/ adapt our products for optimal protection in collaboration with service companies and fish farms.
